D.S. & Durga

Radio Bombay

$6.00

Launched in 2016 by American indie house D.S. & Durga, Radio Bombay was inspired by a “radio sitting in a small hot shop in Bandra – the ‘Brooklyn’ of Bombay (sorry). The heat deconstruct the oils in the wood. Ragas and Geeta Dutt tunes jangle out of its tiny speaker in the busy city.”

Honestly, I can’t vouch for the smell of a warm transistor radio playing in the Brooklyn of Bombay, but Radio Bombay, now, that’s a scent I totally get.

Pale Grey Mountain, Small Black Lake

$6.00

The HYLNDS collection of five fragrances from D.S. & Durga was launched in 2014. Created by perfumer David Seth Moltz, they are what I describe as “atmospheric” scents, as each one tells the story of a Celtic landscape. Spirit of the Glen captures the landscape, around Speyside in the north-east Scottish Highlands.

D.S. & Durga Coriander

$5.00

Fresh-picked coriander is the bright green leaf that completes an Asian or Indian or Mexican dish – earthy and peppery and green tasting. Known as cilantro in North America, the leaves have a light tangy slightly floral scent that becomes part of the flavor when eaten with spicy food. I happen to love the flavour, and the smell. For some, it’s a no-go. The coriander seed is a little different from the fresh leaf – it’s more salt and peppery, aromatic and nutty rather than green-earthy floral.

Spirit of the Glen

$6.00

David Moltz of the indie niche brand, D.S. & Durga, visited Scotland, went to Speyside on the north-east coast and walked the hills and glens (valleys), worked and studied with The Glenlivet distillery, and the result is Spirit of the Glen. Read all about the distillery here, and watch this video with David Moltz – it conveys the magic he experienced in the Highland landscape.

Mississippi Medicine

$6.00

Launched in 2011 by D.S. & Durga and like all their scents, this one has a story. The box says that it is “Based on the rituals of the proto-Mississippian death cult of the 1200s”.

Mississippian culture was established from approximately 800 CE to 1500 CE and varied regionally. It extended from the Great Lakes area all the way down to Florida and over as far as Texas.
