Land Of Warriors – WARNING: This could be your new favourite fragrance - March 2, 2015

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful perfumista named Elena Knezhevich.  She and her husband, Zoran Knezevic, lived in sunny California. One day, they decided to create a website that would be a resource, a guide and a destination for people like them who wanted to know more about fragrance and so they founded in 2006.

Through hard work and dedication over time, became a great success throughout the land and since they love niche fragrances, they decided to start their own niche perfume line. They called it The Vagabond Prince. Their first fragrance, Enchanted Forest, brought the folklore and forests of their Russian homeland to olfactory life. And what a beautiful forest it is - piney, woody, green and mossy all shot through with tart, tangy, blackcurrant. It is the magical smell of the forest at night. So magical in fact that a swan could transform into a beautiful woman emerging from water. This became their second fragrance, Swan Princess. She is a floral beauty with a heart of jasmine, gardenia, lily of the valley, mimosa, iris, rose and peony – only an enchanted forest could have all these flowers growing in it.

But nights can be long in a magical forest, and princesses can get lonely. So Elena and Zoran had the idea to bring sunlight into the enchanted forest. Unicorns, I thought, would do the job nicely. But they had a better idea: horses. Symbols of masculinity and light, legend has it they carry the sun up to the sky each day and bring life to the world. And so this became their third fragrance: Land of Warriors.

And since this is an enchanted forest where swans turn into beautiful women, these horses turn into leather clad warriors because the Land of Warriors is all about leather – a full-on homage to leather. And to men.

Land of Warriors opens fruity, tart and green from angelique seed, violet leaf and blackcurrant leaf. The blackcurrant along with the juniper aspect of angelique seed, set us in the enchanted forest. There is leather is here too, warm and anilmalic, perfectly blended with the smell of pomegranate and blackcurrant set against notes of cucumber and tomato leaf. It’s perfect…simply perfect. As it evolves, so does the leather. It gets resinous. It gets more masculine. Oakwood absolute gives it a heady note of rum, something I always read as ‘masculine’. Saffron and nutmeg make it spicy and sultry, while fragrant davana gives it touch of sweetness before it goes through the most mouth-watering animalic phase from oregano, castoreum and ambergris with a campfire smokiness from tar. Oh, yes, that smell of petroleum that I find irresistible, hangs perfectly poised, just above the leather.

Land of Warriors showcases various aspects of leather in a way that while the fragrance has muscle, it also has a certain refinement that makes it gorgeous to smell and to wear – even for women. I guess that what makes it so magical. Actually, the magic comes from perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour.

Smells like the enchanted forest is shaping up nicely, now that the horses have brought some heat. Horses were so the right choice, I see that now. Unicorns would have been all wrong.

If you love leather frags, as much as I do, Land of Warriors is where you can live happily ever after.
