Magnolia Grandiflora Michel

Posted in

Magnolia Grandiflora Michel is the lush magnolia scent that perfumeur Michel Roudnitska created for himself in 2002, after many years of trying to recreate the smell of magnolia trees in bloom in his parents garden in Grasse, France. But he kept it in his private collection until June 2013 when he met Saskia Havekes of Grandiflora Perfumes.
“I kept it in my private collection in order to find, one day, the right person to launch it……I met Saskia in our laboratory [in Grasse while working with Sandrine Videault] and learnt about her project. I knew immediately she was this person.” In fact, he gifted this scent as a tribute to Sandrine after her passing – Sandrine was mentored by his father, the great perfumer, Edmund Roudnitska (Grandiflora press release – Conversation with Saskia Havekes)
Saskia describes the Magnolia Grandiflora as her “heaven tree….the scent is so subtle, yet remote….the power of the Magnolia Grandiflora dwells in the whole impression of simultaneous beauty: the flower sits on a strong branch, the leaves have such drama and all of this is enveloped by an ancient tree. It makes sense then that my perfume has layers, greenery, light as well as shadow.”
“…while Sandrine paints a fresh portrait of the flower’s first opening, Michel interprets the magnolia as a rich, sensual, open flower at the height of its ripe beauty: heady, enveloping, dreamy.” This magnolia with its white waxy petals is wide open – Grandiflora means “big flower” – and this flower is lush and big….but vulnerable.
The first notes are the citrus notes found in Magnolia Grandiflora Sandrine, but softer and more aquatic, less tart and spicy. This flower is open, with morning dew still beaded on its flesh and leaves. Jasmine, ylang-ylang, and rose in the heart notes build a rich floral complexity, very sensuous when mixed with the creamy magnolia notes, and as the fragrance dries down, vetiver, patchouli, and musc are subtly layered to convey the unusual sensation of a bloom on the verge of decay. The scent is rich vegetal dreamy but very very soft.
Magnolia Grandiflora Michel is an exquisite white floral with tenuous layers of light and shadow, a story of memory and desire rooted in the senses of sight, touch, and smell, told by an artist.
