Nasturtium and Clover and Lavender and Coriander – My herb garden , March 4, 2016

Jo Malone Herb Garden Collection - jomalone.com

Herbs are an essential part of every meal I cook, including breakfast. Parsley and basil and cilantro (coriander if you’re a Brit) are my basics, they add layers of flavour to eggs, pasta, and meats. Oregano, sage, dill, thyme, rosemary, work their magic with salad greens and oils for dressings, as well as with roasted and braised meats. Some, like lavender, are even great with dessert, in cakes or custards. I think food is incredibly bland without herbs, plus there are real health benefits to eating herbs, but that’s another story…

Herbs are also pretty terrific in fragrances. An excellent example, and one of my all-time favourite fragrances, is Jo Malone Lime Basil & Mandarin. I use the Body Oil through winter on my legs and arms to fight dry skin and its delicious subtle citrus-herbal waft throughout the day always feels like a gift of summer sunshine. Jo Malone has a way with natural ingredients – a minimum of 10% essential oils is in every fragrance according to the SA at Holt Renfrew in Toronto. Her creative style is simplicity and elegance, but always with an interesting “twist”, which made me extra keen to try the Herb Garden Collection, a Limited Edition 2016 launch which just came to town.

There are five fragrances in the Herb Garden Collection, which were created by perfumer Anne Flipo, who is known for her simplistic natural style. Some of her fragrances we list in our Decant Store, such as La Chasse aux Papillons, a soft floral highly regarded by niche perfume lovers and a best-seller around the world, Ananas Fizz, both from L’Artisan Parfumeur. She also recently created La Vie est Belle, which has become a big success for Lancome with Julia Roberts as the face on the page.

Along with Celine Roux, Fragrance Director for Jo Malone, Flipo visited a traditional herb garden in England, where the two women were both intrigued by the diversity of the plants, the way they had been planted to complement each other, and the way the garden appeared polished but a little bit unruly, refined but relaxed…Source: jomalone.com

Flipo says in Harper’s Bazaar Singapore, “I wanted these fragrances to be sophisticated… I used many high quality natural ingredients and I wanted…those ingredients…to shine with absolute clarity. This type of construction means that they can be layered with one another to change the nuance of the scent and create something individual.”

It’s no wonder, then, that I bought two of the five scents from the Herb Garden Collection. I’d read nothing about the fragrances or about Anne Flipo’s creative intention to layer the scents, but I came home with two: Lavender and Coriander, and Nasturtium and Clover. I could not have one without the other.

Nasturtium and Clover

Green clover with the sweetness of new-mown lawn mixes with peppery green rocket (arugula) and opens on top of sparkling lemon, becoming after a few minutes a perfectly balanced waft of crisp freshness and sweet warmth. Then nasturtium with its distinctive sour vegetal scent blooms in the heart, wrapped with tendrils of sweet jasmine. In the base, vetiver creates a smooth sueded effect around what has become a soft green floral/herbal accord. Nasturtium and Clover is an unexpected herbal pairing, and it is absolutely sophisticated, absolutely addictive.

Lavender and Coriander

How can this little green bottle hold such a delicious scent? Aromatic and green with lavender and coriander, made tart and juicy with juniper berry, this is an herbal elixir which becomes earthy and faintly woody with sage notes as it dries down, then quietly rich with the sensual vanilla warmth of tonka bean.  Aromatic and heavenly, Lavender and Coriander’s English and French lavenders and herbs shine with Anne Flipo’s absolute clarity.

And when these two are layered together on my wrists, I discover that I’ve bought not two, but three stunning Herb Garden scents. This new combination is fresh and aromatic but with a natural feeling, the green herbal waft of Nasturtium and Clover quietly subduing the richness of Lavender and Coriander, creating a striking new individual scent just for me, which feels stylishly refined, and very relaxed.

I’m in a garden state of mind now – Jo Malone’s Herb Garden.

At this moment, there’s no place I’d rather be.

Nasturtium and Clover and Lavender and Coriander are listed in our Decant Store. Decants are $6.00 for 1 ml.
