New in niche

This is “new” as in “renew”: the fabled Jean Patou perfume brand is being revived and renewed under the new ownership of London-based Designer Parfums Ltd., which bought the brand from P&G. According to Denyse Beaulieu on Grain de Musc, the new owners are relaunching some of the Patou “Ma Collection” classics, aiming for a relauch of the house along the lines of what has been done with Robert Piguet. Read more about the relaunch on Grain de Musc. And keep your eyes peeled for news of the relaunched scents: it sounds as if we’re in for some treats!

Vintage appeal

I’ve never really thought of myself as someone who was fascinated with designer clothing, but as I’ve become more interested in vintage perfume, so too has my interest in vintage fashion grown, since so many amazing vintage perfumes originated with fashion design houses. This Christmas, I was given one amazing coffee table book and then bought another for myself, both focused on vintage designer duds. If you’re looking for eye candy to go along with your vintage frags—and want to know some of the backstories of the designers whose names grace both the dresses and the bottles—check out Vintage Fashion and Couture: From Poiret to McQueen and  Jean Patou: A Fashionable Life.

Deals, deals, deals

If you’re looking for a friendly community of perfume fanatics and a way to sample a wide range of ‘fumes, check out two Facebook groups by typing their names in the Facebook search bar: “Facebook Fragrance Friends” and “International Fragrance Split Association.” The first is more focused on chat and sharing, though splits, sales and decants (along with occasional RAOKs) show up as well. The latter is entirely devoted to splits—where one person purchases a bottle (or more) of a particular fragrance and “splits” it with others who purchase decants usually ranging from 5 ml to 20 ml or more. Both are filled with folks who clearly love frags!

Nosing around

Ralf Schwieger is the nose behind one of my latest lemmings (see below): Charenton Macerations Christopher Street. The Non-Blonde describes it as “bursting with excitement,” with a citrus note that persists throughout, blended with tobacco, clove and dry patchouli. Check out this video of Schwieger speaking about the art of scent.

Makes me want to try it

It’s the time of year when bloggers are compiling their best of 2013 lists—a sure way to breed a few lemmings! Check them out: Bois de Jasmin (lemming: Charenton Macerations Christopher Street); Grain de Musc (lemming: Lolita Lempicka Elle l’aime); Now Smell This (lemming: A Lab on Fire Rose Rebelle Respawn); The Non-Blonde (lemming: Soivohle Carpathian Oud); and the Perfume Posse (lemming: Jovoy’s Gardez Moi).

Just because

Goofy good fun, with Lady Mary from Downton Abbey, and a few less desirable characters.
