Panorama, launched in 2015, is the seventh fragrance from Celine Veleure at Olfactive Studio, and was inspired by an image of modern American architecture, the Sheats-Goldstein house in Los Angeles, a short distance from Beverly Hills in West Hollywood. The house was designed and built between 1961 and 1963 by architect John Lautner who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. It is a stunning five-bedroom private home built into the sandstone hillside, concrete, wood, and glass, cave-like, embraced by natural forest and greenery that surrounds it but open to the astounding view of the city below it. Take a couple of minutes to view the house here on James Goldstein’s website.

Panorama is green, intense and fascinatingly green. So many shades of green. The opening accord is lush and citrus-juicy with  green bergamot, followed by green wasabi, a dry peppery-hot spice on top of the luscious juice that shocks for a few seconds, just like real wasabi. It’s breathtaking, just like the image. The citrus green slides into milky-green bamboo and faint sweet-green fig, notes of fresh-cut grass and violet leaf, resinous galbanum with wasabi still hovering, a balance that makes the heart of Panorama feel soothing, like a soft breeze on a warm day.

In the base, notes of fir balsam, myrrh, patchouli, vanilla, tonka, musk and labdanum unexpectedly emerge, bringing with them a warmer richer green, changing the view from urban jungle to forested hills. The panoramic green notes fade in the dry-down as the warm herbal-wood notes develop and waft quietly for the next few hours, slightly smoky and dry with faint hints of peppery wasabi.

Panorama starts brazenly green and luscious and juicy, with wasabi injecting a new, unsettling game-changing note, becomes more luminous and sweetly green in the heart, and then ends unexpectedly warm and rich and woody, with familiar comforting notes. It has a fascinating development, which, if you’re addicted to top-notes only, will perhaps disappoint, but if you prefer perfumes which have a beginning, a middle, and an end as in a story, then you’ll love Panorama.

Panorama is one of the very best green fragrances I’ve come across in a long long time. It tells the story of a day in a very unique place in California, and if you live in California, or spent some time there, you know that there is a distinct scent to the landscape, and that it changes from morning to noon to evening, from downtown to the suburbs. Panorama captures that scent story perfectly for me, thanks to Celine Verleure and her Olfactive Studio. Bravo, Celine!
