Six Scents, Series One No. 3 The Spirit of Woods was launched in 2008. It’s the result of a collaboration between Symrise, Metaproject and Seven New York. Each year this group pairs avant-garde artists/designers with celebrated perfumers to create exciting new scents, with a portion of the sales going to charity. For this scent, Fashion project COSMIC WONDER Light Source and Japanese artist/designer Yukinori Maeda was matched with perfumer Philippe Paparella.
The booklet that comes in the box says that Philippe Paparella was “Inspired by the designers memory of a scent experienced during a walk through an eucalyptus forest…” I’ve never walked through a eucalyptus forest, but this is the beautiful expression of that experience.
The Spirit of Woods opens fresh and green from green grass and fig leaves. Soon cypress and elemi come forward making it piney. The elemi also bolsters the fresh aspect with a note of citrus. Coriander adds spice and warmth as well as a slight nuttiness. Vetiver keeps it green, while cedar and hinoki make it woody and almost camphourous like eucalyptus is. Amber at the base gives it warmth and depth.
This is the spirit of the woods – leaves, twigs and sap – so fresh, so woody and so FBW.
