Tardes – Afternoons never smelled so good – August 1, 2014 New Fragrance Listing

Have you ever been to Barcelona?

I have. Once. A long time ago. I have vivid memories of my four days in Barcelona when I was an oh-so-smart and naïve nineteen-year-old experiencing Europe for the first time. And after wearing Tardes by Carner Barcelona, and revisiting those memories, I definitely want to go there again.

Tardes, launched as one of the three original Carner fragrances in 2010, means “afternoon “ in Spanish, and the creative brief from owner, Sara Carner, to perfumeur, Daniela Roche-Andrier of Prada fame, described the scent inspired by her home of Barcelona as:

“…a tribute to the peace and harmony of a late summer afternoon; a fragrance that is pure, serene and enveloping… A peaceful stroll through the wheat fields and almond trees as the light of a summer day wanes and the warmth of the air caresses your skin…” Carner Barcelona website

The opening accord is an intense blend of sweet almond and deliciously aromatic rose mixed with the slightly bitter green of geranium. It’s bright and strong, but becomes a lovely cloud of scent after fifteen minutes or so as the almond note deepens, becoming more toasted and less sweet, and the rosy florals soften. The almond note makes Après l’Ondée comes to mind, but this accord is definitely is a more intense interpretation than the almondy heliotrope/violet/iris in Guerlain’s ethereal classic.

Green from celery appears in the heart notes, too, adding a crisp salty edge, and then a plum note adds a subtle dried-fruit-spice powder aura to the deepening almond. The effect is a creaminess that is heightened in the dry-down by vanillic tonka and musk, and the melancholic waft of heliotrope yet again as it weaves in and out. The dry-down in the base reveals cedar and rosewood notes, so that Tardes develops a deeper and more shadowed complexity, but the enchanting floral almond note is still dominant, softer and more woody but sweetly caressing.

Tardes moves from the unrelenting heat of the afternoon sun into the soft hazy warmth of a summer evening with magical ease. This scent that Daniela Andrier and Sara Carner have created is all about serene, pure, enveloping fragrance. Focused on almond, it’s a complex scent that reveals its facets slowly, and on my skin as it dries down, it absolutely becomes the smell of a warm scented summer evening, in Barcelona, when I was nineteen.

This melancholic yearning I feel as I sniff Tardes on my wrists – do I want to be that young girl again, drunk on the excitement of independence and random adventure, or is it just that I want to be in beautiful Barcelona, smelling the almond trees on the evening air? You decide.

Today, we’re adding Tardes to our Decant Store. Decants are $5.00.
