Vol 870 YUL-CDG

Posted in

When Canadian nose Isabelle Michaud decided to leave her successful career as a translator and move to France to study perfumery, she marked the occasion by creating a fragrance called Vol 870 YUL-CDG.
Vol 870 YUL-CDG is the code for the Air Canada flight that flies from Montréal to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. For Isabelle Michaud, this was a flight to a new life. On her website, she says “This perfume expresses the beginning of a beautiful journey that bridges the gap between the New World and the Old Continent. Fir needles, cedar leaves, cypress and clary sage ensure a fresh woodsy, Canadian lift off that propels the perfume above the clouds and into a sun-kissed “accord” of ylang-ylang, osmanthus and luminous bergamot. In its sillage a leathery note with hints of peach, apricot and warm spices. Time stands still for a while until the lure of Europe becomes stronger and leads to a soft landing into rich ambery woods, opulent resins and comforting muscs. A scent that is naïve yet sensual, audacious yet tamed.
It opens, as advertised, fresh and woodsy from the fir needles and cedar wood supported by a green herbal note from clary sage. This is the cool Canadian north – not harsh and wild but refined and tamed. As it moves to the floral heart, the ylang-ylang/osmanthus/bergamot accord comes forward and it is a stunner. Ylang-ylang has so many facets for a perfumer to play with, but it’s the spicy clove and exotic floral aspects I detect most here playing off the sweet peach/apricot and warm leather aspects of osmanthus with citrusy bergamot to keeping it light and fresh. And let me just stop here and tell you that it was this floral, spicy, leathery, fruity blend resting on a rich base of amber and resins that are smoothed by musk that made me fall in love with this fragrance.
Flight 870 YUL-CDG leaves from Montréal daily, but I can guarantee you that it smells nothing like this. This refined, balanced and well-crafted fragrance is the smell of transformation and I just can’t get enough of it.
Isabelle Michaud is a real talent. Every fragrance in her Monsillage line is a winner. And while I think that a man could pull off wearing Vol 870 YUL-CDG is do think it is more of a woman’s fragrance.
But then, you could always take a chance and try something new – just like Mlle. Michaud did.
