Géranium Pour Monsieur

This Frederic Malle fragrance by Dominique Ropion promises geranium, a note I really enjoy in scents because it is so distinctive and unusual. There are many varieties of geranium, and their scents vary, but all possess that distinctive green, earthy, almost resinous aroma which is like no other.

So I was hugely surprised when my first sniff of Géranium pour Monsieur revealed a powerful burst of mint. Cool, clean, airy mint!  Not sweet mint, as in candy, not overwhelming freshener as in mouthwash, but the cool herbal green garnish floating in a frosty summer drink. After the first few seconds, the top-notes developed further and then - yes!, there it was - the wonderful, earthy geranium underneath the cool leaf.

After 15 minutes or so, the mint geranium was softened by spices - aniseed, clove and cinnamon - and musk, encouraging the feminine side of this fragrance to emerge slowly and seductively. As the drydown progressed, this transformation was stopped short of "pretty" by the sandalwood and incense base notes, and under them all, the geranium maintained its earthy presence.

Géranium pour Monsieur is a perfect scent for summer and early fall - it's fresh, but also kind of charming and very chic at the same time. I can't think of any other fragrance which has this unusually interesting combination of green herbal and floral notes.

It's a man's scent in name, but as with all fragrances, it is worn by both sexes - maybe it should have been named Géranium pour Monsieur et Madame.
